The water supply at Gunn High School was shut off for two hours today after a construction team accidentally struck a water line while excavating for Gunn’s new A and B buildings.

Gunn Assistant Principal Mycal Hixon posted a Schoology announcement at 11:30 a.m. stating that the school would remain open during the water shut-off. Meanwhile, district staff worked to make porta-potties, hand sanitizer and plastic water bottles available around campus.

Gunn sophomore Mia Yair was disappointed by the state of the district-provided porta-potties, saying that they were inaccessible and unhygienic.

“At lunch, my friend had to go to the bathroom,” Yair said. “It was sad because all the regular bathrooms were locked, and the porta-potties were disgusting. Gunn should have done better.”

Gunn senior Daniel Van Schewick also spoke about the poor bathroom conditions students had to endure.

“It was brutal because, for a really long time, all the bathrooms were closed and no one could get water from the fountains or go to the restroom,” Schewick said.

Hixon later sent an update at 1:30 p.m. stating that the water had been restored to all bathrooms and water fountains.

“These things happen,” Hixon wrote in an email. “When they do, a safe and speedy response is our top priority. We will continue to review what we do, learn from what we do and continue to improve how we do things.”
