The Mountain View girls soccer team secured the SCVAL De Anza title last week, remaining undefeated this season on a 15-game win streak — most recently extended with a 3-1 win over Santa Clara on Friday. The Spartans are now off to CCS, with their first game this Saturday.
Captain and junior Kate Stone pointed to the group’s combined talent and chemistry as the key to their success; with the exception of a 1-1 tie to Saint Francis, the Spartans have won all of their games this season.
“Our game against Paly … was definitely a big moment because with that win we were guaranteed to win the league,” Stone said. “And we played really well [during] that game, so being able to showcase all that … and it all coming together on that one night … was just really cool.”
The SCVAL De Anza title is awarded to the top finisher of the regular season, not the winner of a championship game. If the team does well at CCS, it’ll advance to the CIF NorCal regional tournament, which Stone said would be an “exciting” experience.
“It’s just such a big tournament and there’s schools from all over,” Stone said. “That would definitely be the goal: to make it to that crowd and be able to do well there.”
Half of the team consists of current seniors, and several are committed to play in college: some at schools like Stanford, Northwestern, University of Chicago and Willamette.
“More than anything, we have a really good group of seniors this year,” Stone said. “We have 14 seniors who have really just led the way [with] just their experience and their ability to play soccer.”
