Los Altos High School is offering two new elective courses for next school year: creative writing and fashion design.

The creative writing course is available for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The course will explore various literary styles, from poetry to narratives and is intended to have mainly in-class work according to Susana Herrera, a teacher for the course next year.

The first semester focuses on narratives and poetry while the second semester focuses on styles such as screenplays and short stories. Additionally, students are also able to continue developing their projects throughout the year.

“If somebody is interested in continuing something that they started in the first semester, they are more than welcome to write what their heart desires,” Herrara said. “It’s just that I want to introduce every type of writing in the creative writing class.”

So far, students have expressed positive reactions regarding the new course. Some students feel that the courses offered at LAHS are tailored toward STEM, and having more creative options is a refreshing change.

“I think it’s honestly a good direction that [LAHS] is going in,” junior Ella Omura said, who is considering the course.

Other students agree that offering courses that branch out from STEM is a step in the right direction.

“There’s more growth that can be had in different types of new classes, but I think this is a good step. It shows the more creative side, instead of just focusing on STEM.” said sophomore Amalie Skakkebeak. “I’m glad to see that there’s fun, creative electives as well.”
