Gunn High School administrators will pilot a new digital hall pass system to increase school safety and students’ whereabouts in case of emergency starting April 14, according to Assistant Principal Eric Olah.
The system mandates students to check in at the start of class by scanning their student ID barcode or typing in their ID number into an assigned classroom Chromebook. Students will also be required to sign in and out when visiting on-campus locations like the wellness center, bathroom and nurse’s office.
The digital hall pass system will be piloted in eight classrooms and several campus locations. Olah hopes to fully implement it by the beginning of next school year.
Olah, who helped launch a similar hall pass initiative last year at Palo Alto High School, acknowledges there might be backlash from students about the new hall pass system and encourages students to voice their concerns as the system expands.
“I know that students are going to feel a certain way about [the system], and I want everyone to know this is meant to increase student safety, and I’m always open to talk about it,” Olah said.
