After months of construction, the renovations on Los Altos High School’s 800s building are finally coming to a close. The project, which began in April, provides the school’s music programs with an upgraded rehearsal space for band, choir and music electives.
Los Altos High Assistant Principal Nicholas Betancur said that although no major structural changes were made, the renovation upgraded several interior elements, including lighting, bookshelves, choral risers, cabinetry, sinks and an upgraded HVAC system.
“[The construction] was a refresh,” said Los Altos High choir teacher Lauren Diez. “All the walls got painted, we updated the electrical, the HVAC. … They gave us new floorings, new lights [and an] additional screen to view projections.”
Los Altos High senior Amelle Badey noted that the construction has increased the buildings’ functionality.
“Before, it was difficult to have an actual space to rehearse, [but] they [the changes] help us use the space better,” Badey said.
Most of the construction of the new building took place over the summer, limiting the impact on students once the school year began, according to Diez.
“We were actually shocked that we were able to move back into the building at the beginning of the school year, because oftentimes, construction projects get delayed,” Diez said.
Even with the addition of the new building, Badey said the impact of the renovations will be determined by how students and staff use the space.
“The construction is definitely positive,” Badey said. “Ultimately, the benefits will come from what we can make of it.”
