Last week, Los Altos High School had its annual Writers Week. The week-long event consisted of author visits and a film called Mustache by Los Altos High graduate Imaran Khan.

Writers Week, a Los Altos High tradition launched 41 years ago, aims to help students understand the importance of what they learn in English classes, according to Los Altos High Librarian Gordon Jack.

“It’s bringing the real world into classrooms to help students see the relevance of what they’re learning,” Jack said.

This year, Writers Week was film-focused due to the popularity of Los Altos High’s film analysis class. Many of the authors who visited classrooms were screenwriters, and the final Writers Week event on Thursday was a film screening, according to Jack. Students were able to watch the film, which was inspired by Khan’s own experience at Los Altos High, and ask questions to the director on stage.

“[Film] is going to be important … [because] so many students are electing to take that [film analysis] as our senior English class,” Jack said. “Storytelling crosses all forms.”

The film, according to Los Altos High junior Samuel Hiltgen, was a positive educational experience and inspirational to see as an aspiring film major.

“It was really fun, [and] the audience was great,” Hiltgen said. “The movie had a beautiful message. … It was fun to see something created that’s similar to what I would like to create at some point in my life.”
