This morning, Palo Alto High School principal Brent Kline announced on Schoology a partnership with Foothill College to bring multivariable calculus and linear algebra onto campus. This partnership will allow Palo Alto High and Gunn High School students to take Math 1C, 1D and 2B during the traditional school day.

“We recognize this is an exciting opportunity for our students to accelerate their math learning,” Kline said in the statement.

The prerequisites for the new classes require students to be enrolled in AP Calculus BC during the 2025-2026 school year and earn a score of three or higher on the AP exam, per the PAUSD and Foothill College articulation agreement, according to Kline.

Currently, PAUSD is gauging interest in the new classes by having students complete a Google form. If the interest exceeds class capacity, seniors will be prioritized. PAUSD will still offer after-school classes through DeAnza College as an option for multivariable calculus and linear algebra, Kline said.

Students have had positive reactions to the new partnership.

“I think that this is going to make it much more convenient for students who want to pursue higher math,” Palo Alto High School sophomore Justin Chen said. “I’m taking calculus in junior year, I have the opportunity to take multivariable calculus or linear algebra in senior year now, and I think that this is a great opportunity for students.”
