The Mountain View Spartans survived a back-and-forth offensive battle Friday night, defeating the Sacred Heart Prep Gators 55-48 in a game filled with explosive plays and momentum swings.
Sacred Heart Prep struck first with an early touchdown drive and a blocked extra point to take a 6-0 lead. Mountain View answered immediately when Micah Perkins (#11) broke free for a 60-yard touchdown reception, giving the Spartans a 7-6 advantage. The lead was short-lived, as the Gators responded with a touchdown of their own to move ahead 13-7 with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Mountain View regained momentum midway through the second quarter when junior Brad Smith (#12) found the end zone to put the Spartans ahead 14-13. Sacred Heart Prep answered again with a deep touchdown pass with four minutes left in the half, reclaiming a 20-14 lead.
The Spartans delivered a critical response before halftime. Perkins hauled in a 40-yard reception and was tackled at the 1-yard line, setting up quarterback Ishaan Devarapali (#7) for a sneak into the end zone. Mountain View took a 21-20 lead into halftime.
The Spartans opened the second half with another explosive play as Devarapali raced 80 yards before being stopped just short of the goal line. Running back Dominik Kristoff (#22) punched in the touchdown moments later, extending the lead to 28-20 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
Mountain View’s defense came up with several key stops throughout the second half, allowing the offense to continue building its lead. Kristoff added a 40-yard touchdown reception to make it 35-20 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Sacred Heart Prep quickly answered with a touchdown of its own, making the score 35-26 by the end of the quarter.
A punt by the Gators early in the fourth quarter gave Mountain View another opportunity, and Kristoff capitalized with a 30-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 42-26. Sacred Heart Prep refused to go away, scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point attempt to make it 42-34.
The Spartans responded immediately. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Kristoff broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 48-34. The Gators answered once again to cut the margin to 48-41 with five minutes remaining.
With the game still close, Kristoff made the decisive play. The senior running back sprinted 50 yards for another touchdown with three minutes left, giving Mountain View a 55-41 advantage. Sacred Heart Prep scored one final touchdown with two minutes remaining, but the Spartans held on to secure the 55-48 victory.
Mountain View’s offense was led by Kristoff, who accounted for multiple long touchdowns both on the ground and through the air. Perkins provided several explosive plays in the passing game, while Devarapali contributed both through the air and on the ground, including a crucial touchdown before halftime and an 80-yard run to open the second half.
In a game that featured 103 combined points, the Spartans answered every Sacred Heart Prep challenge, improving their record to 3-1. They travel to Half Moon Bay next week, where they will face their next opponents of the season.
