For decades, libraries have been a key pillar in both adults’ and children’s education, enjoyment and curiosity. Even in an increasingly digital world, Palo Alto’s libraries serve as social hubs, bringing people together and fostering new connections.
Tina, a local mom, visits the Palo Alto Children’s Library three times a week.
“[The Children’s Library] helps young kids build good reading habits,” Tina said. “Also, whenever [my family and I] go to the library, we meet people around town. It’s good for playdates.”
Michelle, a stay-at-home mom, also expressed the value of libraries as hubs for learning and said she appreciates the variety offered at Mitchell Park Library.
“I like that there are options to play little computer games, there are options to play games at tables, or you can do books,” Michelle said. “There’s a variety of different things inside, air-conditioned and out of the warm sun.”
Palo Alto High School sophomore Daron agreed, highlighting the significance of these tools in helping children grow up.
Libraries are beneficial not only for young children but also for students. Jessie, a senior at Palo Alto High, said she appreciates the calm environment in Mitchell Park Library.
“I like how it’s quiet, and I get to see some of my friends, and we can work together,” Jessie said.
While Jessie goes to Mitchell Park Library almost every day, Daron rarely comes to the library. That being said, he still acknowledges its benefits.
“For me, studying at home works better,” Daron said. “But [Mitchell Park Library] is a nice place to work. It’s very quiet and peaceful, and you can get a lot of stuff done here.”
In addition to libraries being a useful tool for studying and completing work, Sarah, a professional organizer and mother, also noted how libraries help promote communities, including safe and central spaces for people to gather.
Libraries play a profound role in the community, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment that benefits the community.
“For people of all ages to know that they can utilize these resources is wonderful,” Sarah said.
