Reported threats that prompted Gunn High School to shelter in place this afternoon have been determined to be hoaxes, Palo Alto police wrote in an investigation report

Palo Alto’s dispatch center received two calls this afternoon, one reporting a teen boy with two pipe bombs and a rifle strapped to his back and the other a man in his twenties wearing body armor while carrying a rifle, both headed toward Gunn, the report stated.

Meanwhile, at 1:53 p.m., Gunn received a phone call from a male who said he was on his way to the school with a bomb, the report stated.

Officers responded immediately, working with school administrators to place the campus in shelter-in-place, according to the report. The police investigation included closely reviewing surveillance camera footage and a thorough search of the campus, which both led to no evidence of any threat.

Fletcher Middle School was also placed under shelter-in-place, though because there was no evidence of any threat directed at the school, students ended school normally. School administrators lifted Gunn’s shelter-in-place at around 3:40 p.m.

Detectives are working to identify the callers and determine if the incident is related to a similar event reported at a high school in Orinda, according to the report. Hoax threats and false emergency reports are “criminal in nature” and can cause stress for community members.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Palo Alto’s 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413. Anonymous tips can also be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text or voicemail to (650) 383-8984.
