After years of discussion, Palo Alto Unified School District will be offering multivariable calculus on campus starting in the 2025-26 school year.

A Foothill College professor will teach the class at Gunn High School after school and virtually. Around 70 non-senior students in the district qualify to take it if they pass a “math skip test” in middle or high school. The class will only count for college credit and won’t affect students’ GPAs, since it isn’t currently A-G approved and only credentialed teachers can teach GPA courses. Staff at Paly and Gunn have started the approval process, which takes about a year, but there have been no public updates on its current status or timeline for completion.

The class will only count for college credit, not GPA, since the district only allows credentialed teachers to teach GPA courses, and this one isn’t A-G approved yet. Staff at Paly and Gunn are working on getting it approved, but the process takes about a year, and there haven’t been updates on when it’ll be done.

Foothill College said it won’t offer the class during school hours or let parents be involved in hiring.
