38 seniors in the Mountain View–Los Altos Union High School District have advanced to the semifinal stage of the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The seniors join 16,000 other semifinalists named this week, selected from some 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year.

15,000 of the semifinalists are expected to advance to the final stage, which requires an application detailing academic records, community participation, leadership abilities, employment, awards, a letter of recommendation and SAT or ACT scores that confirm earlier performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.

2,500 winners will be selected out of the pool of finalists and receive $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Winners often become eligible for scholarships from other organizations and colleges.
